Sutton Town AFC 3-3 Mansfield Town Youth

Thursday 30th July 2009 - pre-season friendly

" Billy No Mates" again -- Kev's good lady wife has had a bit of back trouble and is undergoing a course of treatment at the hands of former Eastwood Town physio Mr. Fred T. Kirk and unfortunately for Kev her latest appointment clashed with the game.

It has to be said, he missed a really good game - both teams showing loads of commitment and passion that most local derbies usually fail to deliver.

Sutton lined up with new boys Brett Peel, Callum Mason, Lee Stevenson and Richard Groves. On the bench and also new to Sutton were Danny Prance, Jamie Senior and Liam Kennedy.

The Stags were watched over by "pocket rocket" Ryan Williams, with Mike Whitlow watching from the terracing. 1st team squad players, Ton Naylor, Grant Ryan and Ben Turner were in the Stags' staring eleven..

Quite a decent turn out to say that the Blackwell tournament final was being played down the road, and Rainworth were entertaining Eastwood Town. May have been 200+, but I never heard an official gate.

The Stags took the lead after just 5 minutes - a poor back pass from Brett Peel was latched on to on the right by Grant Ryan - he crossed into the area where Anthony Williams was waiting to tap in from a couple of yards.

Sutton gradually took control of the game, and only a great tip over on 24 from Stags keeper James Elliott from a James Senior free-kick kept the scores level. A few minutes later Tom Naylor should have added to the Stags tally, heading wide from just a few yards out.

Sutton's best effort of the half was a cracking run into the area and shot across goal that Elliott dived full length to palm away from a corner. - superb save that had everyone applauding, even Snipes' Manager Danny Bryant - a top, top former non-league keeper. H-T 0-1

On the hour mark, Sutton made several changes to their outfield players, and keeper Mark Frost was replaced as well. The changes had an immediate effect, with Adam Moran crossing into the box for Peter Stubley to side-foot home. Good finish - the ball was at a bit of an awkward height, but Stubley kept his composure and met it well.

Stubley had the ball in the net again on 65, but this effort was disallowed for offside - strange decision as the player had controlled well to beat his marker before running on and firing into the net.

The visitors went in front in the 69th minute when a poor throw from the deputy keeper put Sutton under immediate pressure - and when Turner found Ryan, the striker ran at Peel who simply let him run past him and slot home from an acute angle. Self destruction of the 1st magnitude.
Stubley levelled on 77 - after latching on to a superb through ball he ran up to the Stags keeper, showed him the ball then calmly slotted home.

In the 87th minute, Sutton's 15 year old Liam Kennedy lost the ball in the middle of the park allowing Lewis Croucher a free run at goal - he finished without any problem.

Straight from the kick off, Stubley was brought down in the box - and although he was on a hat-trick, he is one of those centre-forwards who is not too keen on taking penalties - he may have had second thoughts when he saw Danny O'Donnell smash the ball onto the bar.

Mind you, a corner resulted and Kennedy popped up at the far post to head powerfully home and level the scores at 3-3.

Great game, although for periods in the second half both teams were guilty of a lot of direct play (long ball) that gave me a bit of neck ache! Still, a very entertaining game and I left the ground thinking that Sutton have decent enough team to mount a serious challenge on the CMLS title, while for the Stags, these lads are good - some of them very good......

Saturday -- Stags v Hartlepool

Mansfield Town 3-1 Walsall FC

Tuesday 28th July - pre-season friendly at Field Mill ....

The 39 travelling Walsall fans must have wondered what had hit them after the Stags had a cruised to 3-0 lead in just 32 minutes.

A disappointing turn out of just over 1700, but those Stags fans who had made the effort saw their team take apart League One outfit Walsall.

Now, I have no idea of the strength of team Chris Hutchins put out, but an OG by no. 5 Mark Hughes after a superb run and cross by Kyle Perry caught the defender facing his goal - he slid in at the near post to give the home team a 7th minute lead. The Saddlers lined up with big Sam Parkin up front, but Luke Jones and our MOM Scott Garner coped admirably and were seldom troubled in the first half.

The Stags went 2-0 up on 17 when a free-kick from the right was nodded home by Luke Jones. Louis Briscoe added the third in the 32nd minute a superd diving header at the nearpost from a Rob Duffy cross. H-T 3-0

What a half - Stags played really well and looked good in every department.

Walsall scored just 20 seconds after the restart - Peter Till's effort beating Marriott and surprising everyone, but the
Stags soon regained their composure and apart from a decent save from a Parkin shot, Marriott was having a relatively quiet time.

It was that comfortable for the Stags that Manager David Holdsworth made 8 changes - leaving just Garner, Gardner and Marriott from the original starting eleven. Great to see Kyle Nix - last I heard he was stretchered off at Newport.

Anyway, full reports will appear on several websites, so I will not go into any more detail. F-T 3-1

All four goals in the North Stand net -- we were in the South Stand -- typical!!!!

Season tickets have been collected!!

Kev nipped to Field Mill earlier to collect our season tickets...

No idea exactly where the seats are, but if we aren't happy, Stags Chairman Mr. Perry has assured us we may chose alternatives..

Gedling MW 1-0 Hucknall Town

Always a pleasure to visit Plains Road, home of Gedling Miners Welfare FC.

Welfare play in the East MIdlands Counties League ( step 6) and have more or less a new squad, most of last season's Calverton team following Manager Graham Walker to Plains Road. Hucknall are members of the UniBond Premier Division (step 3) and also have more or less a new squad - relegation from the Conference North seeing an exodus of players from Watnall Road...

With Forest playing County, I suppose a large gathering at Plains Road was never going to happen, but there were maybe 60 or 70 present...

Blessed with a programme and team sheet - but it was noticable that the players hadn't seen the sheet - or had they swapped shirts on purpose? Pre-season friendlies are always a bit tricky - with players being changed every five minutes, but in the second half Hucknall caused even more confusion by playing two no. 4's!!

The programme was the usual decent publication - and featured the "On The Road" blog - always a compliment to see my efforts are appreciated. However, programme editor Tony Hay made us smile using a pic of me and Kev, with the caption " what shall we have tonight for tea, dear?"....

It has to be said though, that having a team sheet did help - although we knew most of the Gedling players, and quite a few of the Hucknall squad.

The game began brighly enough, with Hucknall's first chance coming with only 20 seconds on the clock - a firece drive delected away from goal fora corner. It soon transpired that both teams were still in the process of getting to know each other and although Hucknall centre-half Cyrus Richards headed over from close range, and Gedling keeper Lance Walker did well to save from a free-kick, there was little to enthuse about.

The home team scored the games only goal on 43. From a free-kick, Simon Gould's perfectly timed run saw him get to the far post ahead of the sleeping Hucknall defence and volley home. Great ball in, great run, greatfinish, but Town's Assistant gaffer Richard Liburd must have wondered why his defenders had not reacted.... maybe they were thinking of their half time cuppas! H-T 1-0

Hucknall changed so many players in the second half it was difficult to keep track - but the addition of Gary Sucharewycz to the back line ensured that the home team were kept at bay.

For Hucknall, their no.18 should have done better with a diving header on 75, while Laurie Wilson flashed a shot just wide from 30 yards just after.

Welfare's impressive right back, Chris Hall should have doubled the home teams lead just before the final whistle, just failing to connect at the far stick. F-T 1-0

Tuesday -- back to Field Mill -- Stags v Walsall ....

Friday 24 July 2009

Blidworth Welfare 0-1 Mansfield Town Youth

24th July 2009 --- Friday night footy!!

Nice bonus game - another chance to watch the Stags' Youngsters in action against Central Midland Supreme team Blidworth Welfare.

Kev was otherwise engaged, so I spent the game chatting to serial hopper Steve Davies. Steve rarely re-visits grounds, but after our classic visit to Blidworth last season he has developed a fondness for the venue...he was not too over-enthusiastic about the ox-tail soup he bought at half-time, but as he said "I paid £0.60p for it so I'll drink it" !!

8:00pm kick off for some reason, but it was a pleasant evening and at least it stayed dry!

The first half saw the young Stags struggle against their stronger, more experienced opposition, but despite a few scares and a few last ditch clearances they managed to keep their goal intact. H-T 0-0

Mike Whitlow rang the chages at the break, and Blidworth were forced to up their game to keep the Stags at bay. The only goal of the game came in the 67th minute. After a spell of pressure that saw Blidworth keeper Jamie Davies pull off a couple of good saves, the Stags no. 14 latched onto a ball in from the right and after controlling well, slid the ball past Davies from about 10 yards out.

The goal seemed to re-invigorate the Blidworth players and they started to pile a bit of pressure on the visitors defence. The home team were awarded a free-kick some 20 yards from goal on 37 that brought out a great finger tip save from the Stags' keeper. From the resultant corner, the ball was hammered onto the bar - it flew vertically down onto the goal-line and was retreived by a grateful keeper. F-T 0-1

Over 100 in attendance - and at £4 a head it was a decent payday for Blidworth.

Saturday -- would have liked to have gone to Alfreton to watch the Stags first team in action, but with a potential 5-600 crowd, parking would be a nightmare... so we are off to Gedling MW to see them take on free-scoring Hucknall Town...

Thursday 23 July 2009

Carlton Town 3-2 Wrexham

Our latest pre-season outing took us to Stoke Lane, home of UniBond Division One South team Carlton Town.

Advertised as a 7:45 kick-off, we arrived just after 7:30 to hear Referee Michael Leslie blow his whistle to start the game....... we missed about a minute of the game, but others were still coming through the turnstile at 7:40pm!

Bit of a tight squeeze in the car-park, but found a decent spot near the Wrexham team bus - no danger of anyone blocking me in.

Wrexham fielded a reserve/second string for the first half, and Carlton took full advantage playing their visitors off the park. The home team took the lead on 25, a cracking 20 yard free-kick from Martin Ball planted accurately into the top of keeper Chris Maxwell's net. It was 2-0 to the home team 5 minutes before the break, a superb right-foot effort from Aiden Brady from almost 30 yards out that curled into the top corner giving the keeper no chance..........H-T 2-0

Dean Saunders changed all 10 outfield players at the break, starting the half with what was basically his first team and keeping his promise to Carlton that he would bring a strong squad to Nottingham.

Adrian Cierlewicz reduced the visitors' arrears on 52, beating Grant Brindley to the ball before slotting past Ali Barcharini. The home defence had to absorb a lot of pressure as the Dragons poured forward in search of the equaliser - but it was the visitors who went further ahead when Tristram Whitman fired home on 43. Adrian Cierlewicz made it 3-2 seconds later, beating his maker to the ball before sliding the ball under Barcharini. F-T 3-2

Report from Wrexham site

New Carlton players on show included Craig Swinscoe, Paul Mitchell, Justin Jenkins and Danny Moore.

Mansfield Town 0-0 Leicester City pt II

A few more points from the game...

Not too sure about the sky-blue and white stripes - the Stags new away (change) kit, but at least the players' names were clear - good news when most of the players are new!!

Louis Briscoe was awarded MOM for the Stags - no argument from either me or Kev. However we both agreed that the best player on the park was the Foxes no. 7. This player crossed the ball for fun!!

Steve Howard missed a sitter from 6 yards out in the first half, but Luke Graham and Scotty Garner coped well enough against a strong Leicester team.

From MTFC website

Thursday -- Carlton Tn v Wrexham -- not too sure what strength team Dean Saunders will take to Stoke Lane because Wrexham played Preston NE on Tuesday....

Tuesday 21 July 2009

Mansfield Town 0-0 Leicester City

Pre-season friendly 21st July 2009

Very creditable draw for the Conference team against their Championship visitors. Stags loooked very good indeed - just the worry about Craig Armstrong playing at left-back ....not going to happen again surely!!

Daryl Clare had the ball in the Leicester net very early on in the second half, but was adjudged to be off-side -- Stags keeper Alan Marriott made one terrific save soon after to keep the scores level.

The Stags have a wealth of talent up front - when Jason Bradley came on to play up top with Kyle Perry and Louis Briscoe the trio were a real handful for the Foxes defence.

Nice to see young Harry Hawkins as 4th official - Harry can usually be seen running lines in the CMFL.. but it has to be said that although the electronic board looked a bit heavy for him, he did a good job with so many of the usual pre-season friendly player changes!!!

Tuesday 21st July 2009

Looking forward to going to Field Mill to see the "new" Stags team in action against Leicester City.

With 12 new players signed on since the end of last season, it can't imagine it will be easy for the Stags to gel immediately, but this is what pre-season is about and hopefully the lads can put up a decent showing against their Championship opponents.

Sunday 19 July 2009

AFC Sutton Town v Royston

My previous blog entry may have been a bit misleading - Royston did arrive late for this game, but the game went ahead... albeit kicking off at 3:30pm.

My decision to forget the game was mainly because I wasn't feeling 100% and pre-season friendlies are not A1 "must go to" fixtures - plus I had interrupted my Ashes viewing to make the trip to Sutton -- as it transpired, Sutton lost 0-2 to a very good step 5 side, and the cricket was excellent.....

On the subject of cricket : I parked my car outside the football ground and was a little concerned whether the cricket ball could be hit far enough to worry me. I asked Stubs and he very said he'd seen nothing to give me concern -- then two minutes later the ball went sailing over the fence and into the fooball ground!! Over 100 yards from the square...great hit! Moved my car to Hucknall!

Saturday 18 July 2009

18th July...

Went to the Fieldings to see AFC Sutton Town take on Royston Town - but was back home by 3:25pm.

Parked up outside the ground at 2:45pm and spotted Snipes' striker Pete Stubley watching the cricket match being played adjacent to the football ground. He informed me that the Hertfordshire team hadn't turned up ...they were stuck in a traffic jam somewhere. So much for my "magic" comment about teams travelling miles for a friendly....anyway, by 2:55pm I had made the decision to go home as it was too late to consider other options - which were :

Arnold Town v Welbeck Welfare 3pm
Blidworth Welfare v Gedling Southbank 3pm
Clipstone Welfare v Rainworth MW 3pm
Kimberley Town v Eastwood Town 3pm
Kirkby Town v Hucknall Town 3pm
Pinxton FC v Mansfield Town FC 3pm

Pinxton is just 10 minutes from the Fieldings, but I would never have got there before kick off, and I hate missing the start of a game, so I made the short trip back down the M1 and watched the Ashes....

Tuesday - Stags v Leicester City --c'mon you Stags!

Wednesday 15 July 2009

15th July 2009

Kirkby Town 1-2 Mansfield Town Youth Team

Our first visit to the Summit Centre Complex, and very enjoyable it was too..

Arrived just before kick off and struggled to find a space to park - but a grass verge looked inviting so had a tootle round and ended up in a prime spot for a quick exit.

We know very little about KIrkby Town and even less about the Stags youngsters - but both teams played really well and gave the crowd of 300 a decent bit of pre-season entertainment.

Stags took the lead on 44, a superb drive from Nick Langford from the edge of the box beating Kirkby keeper Paul Stanhope. H-T 0-1

It was Langford who netted the Stags' second on 63, this time a delicate chip over Stanhope from the edge of the box bringing out some well deserved applause.

Kirkby never gave up and after hitting the woodwork and then forcing the Stags' keeper to give away a corner, Carl Haslam popped up at the far post to nod home. Both teams were very competitive, and one or two words from
the Referee were needed at times to calm things down.

Nice sunny evening - had a nice chat to Fredkirkbytown and caught up with the CML's Rob Hornby. Pleased to see him again after fears that illness during the close season may slow him down a little!! All in all a very nice evening in a very pleasant setting.
F-T 1-2

Admission £3
Programme £1
Attendance 300
Tea -- very nice according to Kev....and only 10 bob!

Saturday -- Sutton Town AFC v Royston FC ... these players are travelling all the way from Hertfordshire to play a pre-season friendly - magic!!

Tuesday 14 July 2009

2nd pre-season game

Blidworth Welfare 0-7 Worksop Town

Despite the sporadic heavy showers the teams provided some decent fayre.... although like last Saturday, CLM Supreme v UniBond Premier = no contest.

The first shock was that we had to fork out £4 for the pleasure of entering the ground - it is only usually £3 on matchdays, so paying an extra quid because of the higher league opposition seemed a bit harsh.

The next thing we noticed was that the old snap-shed has been replaced by a bright yellow portacabin. Still had the Orange Lucozade on sale though, thank goodness.

I'm not going to even try to work out who scored what goal, but the scoring went something like this:

22 minutes - no 10 headed powerfully homed from a terrific ball into the box.

25 minutes - no. 9 swept the ball home after some fine interplay lead to the ball being fed into the area.

44 minutes - no 9 tapped in from close range after a bit of a mad scramble in the 6 yard box.

H-T 0-3

51 minutes - no. 9 played in no. 11 who calmly slotted past the keeper

68 minutes - no. 5 powered home a header from a corner

72 minutes - no. 11 finished off a great passing move

and as the game drew to a close, the no. 12 was given a simple task of heading home after some cracking wing play.

F-T 0-7

Scorers are listed on the Tigers' website - with a full report to follow

All in all, a good game, although what either team can take from it I'm not sure. Both teams played well enough. Worksop's wingers really caught the eye, the tricky little feller on the right, no. 7 showing some decent speed and control at times, and the no. 11 on the left wing played havoc with the home defence all through the game.

Wednesday -- off to Kirkby to see them play Mansfield's youth team.

Saturday 11 July 2009

1st pre-season game

Calverton MW 0-6 Hucknall Town
Arrived at the ground about 2:40pm for this 3:00pm kick-off, and as I was a bit early I thought I'd be clever and move my car a bit nearer to the ground - and would you believe the bloody thing wouldn't start! Bugger.. phoned the RAC and got a deferred appointment so I wouldn't miss the game. RAC partol was booked for anytime between 5 and 6pm. At 5:45 I gave them a call and they told me they had screwed up, and I had been listed as "not found".

To be fair, 10 minutes after the call, I had the joyous sight of an RAC patrol heading up Collyer Road. Diagnosis -- battery was a bit poorly. Well, it wasn't so much poorly as nearly dead! So after a quick jumpstart I nursed the bloody useless banger home - always in fear of stalling.

The RAC then made a home visit to replace the battery - but at a cost. Still, safely home and with a nice glass of Shiraz in hand I can now report on the afternoons entertainment.

Walking to the main pitch it was noticable that the gate was not open, and there were no nets up. The game was to be played on a side pitch, although with two minutes to go there had only been one set of goals erected. I think Calverton missed a trick here, there were an estimated 150 people in attendance, and the club could have made a few bob by charging a couple of quid each.

Kicked of a few minutes late, but it was worth it. Hucknall Town were relegated from the Conference North last seaon, and are now in the UniBond Premier Division. Calverton play in the CML and the gap in class was obvious from the get-go. I didn't recognise many of the Caverton players - we saw them a few times last season, but there were several noticable absentees - Jason Westwood, Warren Hatfield, Baz Paine.....

Of the Hucknall contingent, I recognised Gary Sucharewyzc, Deon Meikle, Antwon Bonwick and Terry Hawkridge and Willis Francis. The visitors looked impressive from the start, but the opposition, to be fair, weren't the best. Gary Sucharewycz opened the scoring on 14 with a far post header from a corner - then Antwon Bonwick netted on 25 with the no.12 adding the third on 38.

Second half saw all 10 outfield players replaced -- not sure of who was who, but they emulated their first half collegues by netting three times -- timed at 67, 70 and 75 minutes.

Finished 0-6, but it could have been 12 - as a game it was no contest, and you feel Town have to get find some stiffer opposition before they face a very difficult season in a very tough league. Calverton looked out of their depth and looked like a team who didn't know each other. I realise that Hucknall are 4 steps above Calvo in the pyramid, and it may be to early to judge, but I fear they may face a struggle in the CML Supreme next season.

Tuesday -- off to Blidworth to see them take on Worksop Tn.....

Monday 6 July 2009

To PC or not to PC !!!! Fax is the question......

At the Conference AGM on 13th June, Dennis Strudwick, the Conference General Manager, announced that the fixtures for the 2009-10 season would be ready no later than Friday 3 July. Work couldn't start on them until after the Football League had announced its fixtures, since clubs are invited to ‘pair’ with other clubs to avoid clashes of fixtures and some Conference clubs pair with league clubs.

What you may not know is that the Conference fixtures are prepared ‘by hand’, rather than using a computer program. At the AGM, Dennis was praised for his work, which member clubs appear to prefer to the automated approach used by most other leagues.

I wonder if my team, Mansfield Town will agree with that after the "hand-job" gave them home Tuesday night fixtures against Oxford Utd and Luton Town, two clubs with huge travelling followings -- who knows how many fans can't or won't travel midweek that would normally travel on a Saturday.....the potential loss in revenue is a bit of a kick in the taters after how the club was treated by the League last season. If the fixtures are done manually or by PC programme, surely changes can be made to ensure every club gets the best fixtures package possible. As it is, 10 of the 24 Blue Square Premiership clubs, including the mighty Oxford United, have a free Saturday in season 2009-2010.... a free Saturday? Blimey, takes me back to kids football..............
Back in the days when a home PC was as rare rocking horse droppings, I remember taking a trip to the home of Young Elizabethan League Fixtures secretary Brian Ridgard to help him compile the coming season's fixtures. This was circa 1995/96 and the YEFL was, at the time, for Under 10's to Under 14's with well over 100 teams involved. Sorting out the fixtures was a tedious, mind numbing job -- with over 100 teams to have games allocated - and take into account that some clubs had more than one team, some clubs had teams in every age group, and some clubs had two teams in the same division!!! Then remember that some clubs used the same pitches so had to be kept apart - what a nightmare. There were bits of paper all over the kitchen units, the lounge floor, the coffee table.

But computer software ended all that hard work - or did it? There are FREEWARE programmes such as http://www.download3000.com/download-home-or-away-league-scheduler-count-reg-25729.html that do all the hard work, leaving just a few tweaks needed to tidy odds and ends up.
As I pointed out at the start of this diatribe, this is not so for the Conference because Conference fixtures are prepared ‘by hand’, rather than using a computer programme... I remember Mr. Ridgard fighting against the introduction of computer generated fixtures -- he wanted to keep his position on the League Management committee safe -- and it's just my opinion (and I know nowt) -- but shouldn't someone, somewhere begin to drag the Conference kicking and screaming into the 21st century??

Four clubs – the Stags, Oxford, Crawley and Bognor Regis – were docked points last season for fielding an ineligible player or players. That led to complaints from the teams and their supporters that the league needed to address the way the registrations were handled. Of particular frustration was that details still had to be faxed, rather than using an up-to-date computer database.

The Conference announced it would conduct an internal review and later publish their findings. The results were announced and Conference chairman Brian Lee said he was 'satisfied that all the necessary office systems are in place.

Conference Chairman Brian Lee - "we have endured a difficult season. We want things to be better. We are introducing a new software system." So the League does at least have a computer then....!!
